More than a dozen large and small charitable nonprofits told CNN they have exceeded their ability to help and warned that the level of support they can provide will fall far short.

Already strained by federal funding cuts earlier in the year and a surge in demand from furloughed federal workers, food banks face a fresh wave of need as SNAP benefits end Saturday.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is calling for more volunteers at its S. Waterloo Healthy Choice Food Market to meet rising demand as residents lose their SNAP benefits, starting this weekend.

To help meet the community’s needs, the Weld Food Bank has added food distribution hours, scheduled additional mobile food pantry stops and purchased nearly $250,000 of additional food.

Laura Brooks with God’s Pantry Food Bank estimates that 250,000 people in central and eastern Kentucky may need to supplement their SNAP benefits with food provided by local food banks and pantries.
