An order from the Minnesota Department of Corrections says the inmate population needs to be lowered to under 600.

The suit was brought by Lou Bellamy, the founder of Minneapolis’ renowned Penumbra Theater. It came after his son Lucas died in 2022, allegedly after begging guards to be taken to the hospital.

A Minnesota Department of Corrections report says the county jail failed to complete mandatory wellness checks and have appropriate staffing on multiple occasions.

The settlement comes as the Hennepin County Jail is facing new scrutiny from the state for chronically failing to meet legal standards and putting inmates at risk.

The Hennepin County Adult Detention Center has been order to reduce its inmate population by more than 200 people by Thursday. FOX 9’s Mike Manzoni explains what that means, and where current convicts might end up.
