Thailand has reinforced its military presence along a disputed border with Cambodia, following an increase in troops on the other side, Thailand's defence minister said on Saturday. Tensions between the two Southeast Asian countries have been simmering since a Cambodian soldier was killed on May 28 in a brief conflict in an undemarcated border area.

Thailand is decreasing the amount of time that checkpoints on the Cambodia border are open, as well as banning the crossing of some people and trucks.

Although intense national pride is key to the standoff between Thailand and Cambodia, it’s not the only factor. The long-disputed land to the north of the Cambodian-owned Preah Vihear temple means that Thailand currently controls easy access to the temple grounds,
