Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday that he was “disappointed” but would work to build Canada’s economic resiliency and diversify its trading relationships.

On Thursday, Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs against U.S. trading partners that will go into effect next week. The announcement came on the same day that an appeals court grappled with the question of whether Trump’s tariffs are even legal.

He also imposed a tariff of 50% on more than half of America’s imports from Brazil, complaining the country was persecuting Jair Bolsonaro, its former president, much as Mr Trump himself felt persecuted after he was ousted from office in 2021.
