Thousands of Bundaberg residents could be cut off for days without any access to food or medication, while more than 400 homes and businesses are at risk of being flood, authorities have warned.

An emergency situation was declared in Bundaberg overnight as the city braced for flooding not seen since 2010.

Elsewhere, the Bruce Highway was closed, towns were cut off and multiple rescues as a barrage of rain hammered southern and central Queensland. Some parts copped up to 180mm of rain in three hours.
