Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Monday that the government shutdown will likely delay food benefits for millions.
California is the latest state to sound the alarm as over five million SNAP recipients are at risk of not receiving benefits beginning as soon as November 1, as Capitol Hill remains at a standstill.
About 42 million people receive money through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, sometimes called food stamps. The U.S. Agriculture Department told states in an Oct. 10 letter that if the shutdown continues, the program will run out of money to pay for benefits in November.
Financing unemployment insurance benefits with federal loans and taxes on employers cannot continue indefinitely.
