About 10% of Hawai‘i Community Lending homeowners are federal employees, meaning more than 60 families are impacted by the government shutdown. The loans are for up to $5,000 across four months, with modifications made on a case-by-case basis. The no-interest move comes at a time when these employees may be struggling to make ends meet.
The federal Home Affordable Modification Program, which is designed to guide the modification process to the benefit of the lender (not the borrower), has helped 12 percent of a potential 3 million borrowers stay in their homes, recent reports have shown.
