Winter weather alerts have been issued in five New Jersey counties with up to 7 inches of snow possible on Tuesday from a storm that will also bring heavy rain to southern counties.

Ahead of the wintry weather, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency effective at 5 a.m. ET on Tuesday for several counties in the northwestern part of the state "due to a potentially significant winter storm causing hazardous weather conditions, including heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain."

The Northeast was getting ready Tuesday for its first major snowstorm of the season, just as the Midwest began to escape snow and ice that snarled travel after the Thanksgiving holiday.
