A second federal judge ruled Thursday that thousands of probationary employees laid off en masse by the Trump administration must be temporarily reinstated to their jobs.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday ordered President Donald Trump’s administration to reinstate thousands — if not tens of thousands — of probationary workers let go in mass firings across multiple agencies last month, saying that the terminations were directed by a personnel office that had no authority to do so.

U.S. District Judge James Bredar's order applies to 12 departments and several agencies that fired probationary workers during the Trump administration.

The sweeping court order added the nation’s environmental regulator to a long list of agencies that must bring back probationary workers.

The order from U.S. District Judge James Bredar came in a lawsuit filed by 19 states and the District of Columbia against multiple federal agencies alleging the mass firings are illegal.

Unions and organizations who brought the lawsuit celebrated the order as a win for thousands of federal probationary workers who have been fired.

The order is effective immediately, and effects six government agencies, including the Department of Defense and Veterans Administration.

The order by U.S. District Judge James Bredar was even more broad than a similar ruling earlier in the day from a different federal judge.
