A top White House official on Wednesday claimed Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell could lose his job over his allegedly “deceptive” testimony to Congress over the central bank’s lavish $2.5 billion revamp of its DC headquarters.

As White House officials including the president escalate attacks on the central-bank chair, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency alleges Powell misled lawmakers about a renovation of Fed headquarters in Washington.

William Pulte, FHFA director and chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, released a statement Tuesday accusing Powell of providing deceptive testimony to Congress and suggesting there may be grounds for his removal.
