Hurricane Melissa roars toward Jamaica as a Category 4 storm as island prepares for landfall
Hurricane Melissa is roaring toward Jamaica with destructive Category 4 winds and was expected to strengthen further before making landfall on the Caribbean nation with up to 30 inches of rain and a life-threatening storm surge.
As Category 5 Hurricane Melissa threatens multiple Caribbean islands with a projected path to make landfall in Jamaica by Oct. 28 before continuing on through Cuba, The Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos, Carnival and other cruise lines have made major changes to this week’s Caribbean cruise routes.
"Catastrophic winds in the eyewall have the potential to cause total structural failure especially in higher elevation areas tonight and early Tuesday."
"It is more than kind of distressing because you don't know when and you don't know how," said Ewan Simpson, who lives in Jamaica.
Hurricane Melissa is expected to make landfall early Tuesday in Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane. Central Alabama will not feel any direct impacts, but it is hitting hard for some people in the area.
The U.S. Navy relocated hundreds of nonessential personnel from Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to Florida over the weekend.
