Seattle Mariners star Cal Raleigh became the first catcher to win the event in its four decades of existence on Monday, edging Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero in the final, 18 to 15. Caminero would've been the youngest Derby champion ever at 22 years old.
"You just hope it doesn't end," the Yankees slugger said Monday afternoon during All-Star media availability. "You just try to stay in the moment. Stay locked in. Don't try to think about it, because you'll be good for a couple of weeks.
Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez was crowned 2024 Home Run Derby champion after defeating Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. in the finals. Hernandez slugged 14 homers in the final round, one more than Witt, to become the first Dodgers player to win the Derby title.
Raleigh will become the second-ever player to switch hit in the Derby ( Adley Rutschman in 2023, lost 2nd round), plus no catcher has ever won the derby. This is year 39 of the event, so odds are against Raleigh despite him being the favorite.
