The death toll from a devastating typhoon and its aftermath in Vietnam has risen to 233. State media reported the increased numbers Friday as rescue workers recovered more bodies from areas hit by landslides and flash floods.

Vietnam is preparing for more flooding with a tropical depression forecast to strengthen into a storm as it heads to its central coast, days after typhoon Yagi set off floods and landslides that killed more than 290 people in the north.

The death toll from Typhoon Yagi and its subsequent rain that triggered floods and landslides has climbed to 87 as 70 others remain missing and hundreds were injured, state media said.

Manufacturers say that while many factories acted early to minimize damage, roughly 10 percent of buildings in Haiphong are deeply damaged.

The death toll in Vietnam from typhoon Yagi and the landslides and flash floods it triggered rose to 226 on Thursday, the government's disaster agency said, as flood pressure eased in the capital Hanoi.

Even before the typhoon, the UN estimated 18.6 million people out of a total population of 55 million needed humanitarian assistance.
