Skyrocketing cost of cocoa beans raises the price of chocolate before Valentine's Day
According to the International Cocoa Organization, prices are now soaring. The cost of cocoa in the United States is more than $10,000 per ton, the highest it's been in 50 years. But for Ruthie, it's not just the chocolate that's at a higher price point.
When a Spanish shipment of cocoa beans veered off course and was seized off the coast of Britain in the 16th century, its captors assumed the contents were sheep droppings and burned it.
Cocoa beans demand fell in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2024 and for the year as a whole, though it remains relatively stable, according to a report from the European Cocoa Association.
