California has sent a strike team to Kentucky to assist with the ongoing response and recovery efforts following severe weather that has led to more than a dozen deaths.

Kentucky is battling devastating floods after another powerful winter storm hit the eastern U.S. over the weekend, leaving at least 10 people dead.

Much of the commonwealth remains under flood watches or warnings Sunday morning after some areas received more than 6 inches of rain within a 48-hour period.

Storms have overwhelmed the state in recent years. On top of the floods, snow is expected soon. Sheets of rain drenched Kentucky in recent days, causing floods that turned roads and neighborhoods into rivers in a part of the country that has been pummeled by severe weather in recent years.

Many of the deaths were caused by cars getting swept away or stuck in floods, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said. Hundreds of people had to be rescued.
