After tearing through the Caribbean, leaving destruction, flooding and more than 50 deaths so far, Melissa has lost power heading into the Atlantic.

Hurricane Melissa was no longer on tracking maps by early Nov. 1, the first day of the final month of hurricane season.

Melissa’s terrifying trip through the Caribbean also piled on evidence of the influence of a warming ocean on an evolving hurricane landscape.

The National Hurricane Center's 2 p.m. Friday update reported that Tropical Storm Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 230 miles southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 250 miles southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. Packing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, it is tracking east-southeast at 2 mph.

Hurricane Melissa has strengthened back into a Category 2 hurricane after devastating Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas and is heading toweard Bermuda.

Tropical Storm Melissa is forecast to become a major Category 4 hurricane as it meanders throughout the Caribbean Sea, bringing heavy rains and potentially deadly flooding to some of the islands in that region.

A hurricane watch has been issued for the southern peninsula of Haiti from the border with the Dominican Republic to Port-au-Prince.

The National Hurricane Center's 5 p.m. Thursday advisory reported that Tropical Storm Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 185 miles south-southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 295 miles southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. With maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, the system is moving to the north-northwest at 2 mph.
