South Carolina has executed Richard Moore, the second death row inmate to die at the hands of the state this year.

Moore's attorney describes a formerly addicted man who is now a devout Christian, a good father and a changed man. Only the governor can stop the execution now.

Moore was the last person remaining on South Carolina's death row to be convicted by a jury with no Black members, his defense attorneys say. He is also believed to be the only person in the history of South Carolina's death penalty executed for an armed robbery who did not bring the fatal weapon to the scene.

Richard Moore, the Spartanburg man, on death row for murder, was executed Friday evening. Moore, 59, was convicted in 2001 of murdering James Mahoney, a store clerk, two years earlier. He was put to death by lethal injection after South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster denied a request for clemency.

Friday night in North Charleston, the ‘South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty’ group held a vigil for Richard Moore at Cokesbury United Methodist Church. The group had previously asked South Carolina Governor McMaster to delay the execution.
