A weather warning for high winds has been upgraded from yellow to amber for most of Scotland on Friday. Gusts of up to 90mph are expected during the first named storm of 2025.

A rare, red warning has also been issued by Ireland's weather service ahead of the arrival of Storm Eowyn, warning of "severe, damaging and destructive gusts".

Storm Éowyn – pronounced "ay-oh-win" – and the fifth named storm of the season will undergo rapid development during Thursday as it moves across the Atlantic. It will be fuelled by a very powerful jet stream which is fast moving air high in the atmosphere where wind speeds are around 260mph (418km/h).

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Mike Silverstone said: “The strongest gusts are likely to be felt across parts of Northern Ireland, northern England, north-western Wales and western Scotland, where exposed sites could get gusts in excess of 80mph, which has the potential to cause impacts for those in these areas.

The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for wind affecting nearly the whole of Kent. Storm Eowyn will cause disruption to travel throughout the country later this week. The alert will be in place from midnight on Friday (January 24) to 11.
