The White House announced on Thursday that President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). The announcement followed growing public speculation over visible swelling in the president's legs and bruises on his hands.

Trump, 79, underwent medical tests to examine leg swelling and bruising on his right hand. Both conditions have been visible in recent photographs.

The veins are supposed to keep blood flowing back to the heart and the valves in the veins are supposed to prevent backward flow.
