Jack Shapiro, 54, was surfing in cold waters off Gilgo Beach on Sunday when a passerby spotted him unresponsive in the water.

Jack Shapiro, 54, of Holbrook, was transported via ambulance to Good Samaritan University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death will be determined by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852- 6392.
