Throughout his career, Wilson undertook formal likenesses of historical and contemporary figures, such as his portraits of John Spencer Bassett or Ralph Ellison. These tended to be rather decorous works, as befitted their public purpose.

Although fewer of the public commissions in which he specialized came to pass after the mid-1980s, Wilson continued to honor the history of the civil rights movement with portrait busts of prominent activists, such as this one of Medgar Evers (1925–1963).

For Wilson, sculpture is about image-making, and the artist is a master of creating iconic works which resonate with eaning. Wilson's marriage of political content with potent-and poetic-imagery recalls in purpose, if not style, such sculptors as Ed and Nancy Kienholz, Luis Jimenez, Kiki Smith, and Paul McCarthy.
