The original version of Hurt, written by Trent Reznor and performed by @nineinchnails, is one of my all time favorite songs. The lyrics are so brutally honest and true. One of the things I love about it is the gritty, relentless sharp four, like a hole in the skin that just won’t heal. (Johnny Cash’s cover, while haunting, completely removes that sharp four). When I made my cover I leaned into that sharp four and tried to keep that sense of a beautiful, devastating inhaled wound. Performed here
