Oxytocin is produced by the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland. It plays a role in childbirth, lactation, and sexual behavior. Clinical uses for oxytocin include induction of labor, strengthening contractions during labor, controlling postpartum hemorrhage, and managing an incomplete or inevitable abortion. They are the “same” but they don’t have the same effects! Oxytocin: produced in the brain, sent into the blood stream in pulses which produce contractions AND natural pain relief! Yep, the very thing your body produces to make contractions stronger also reduces your pain. Pitocin or Syntocinon: given via IV and given in constant high doses. Creates stronger and more frequent contractions vs. oxytocin. Much higher risk of low oxygen for baby. Doesn’t create pain relieving sensations like oxytocin
