It’s not what it seems. Far from being natural, The Hermitage in Dunkeld was designed as a pleasure garden, for the Dukes of Atholl, in the 18th century. The highlight is Ossian’s Hall, completed in 1783, to replace a summerhouse; a retreat or hermitage from daily life and the stresses and strains of being an 18th century Duke… It was blown up with gunpowder in 1869, probably as a protest at increasing bridge tolls charged by the 7th duke. It originally housed a drawing room. But it’s best used
