King Leonidas I of Sparta, who reigned in the 5th century BCE, is best known for his heroic leadership at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE. As a descendent of the Agiad dynasty, Leonidas was both a product of Spartan warrior culture and the rigorous "agoge" training. When the Persian King Xerxes invaded Greece, Leonidas led a select force of 300 Spartan hoplites, alongside other Greek allies, to defend the pass at Thermopylae.
